5 Ways To Foster A Leadership Mindset Across Your Company

Legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Leaders are not born, they're made.” While it sounds very cliché, it's true.

A recent study by the Center for Creative Leadership showed that roughly 38% to more than half of new leaders fail within their first 18 months. Employees are given managerial positions without imbibing any leadership skills in them. As an organization, it is the duty of the senior management and members to teach and train their employees to be able to lead under any circumstances.

Employees in companies that take on a leadership mindset innovate more and show tremendous growth opportunities. It’s a win-win for all.

Here are 5 easy ways for developing a leadership mindset – in a team or organization.

  • Take accountability and responsibility
Accountability in the workplace is important for both work product and business results. When something goes wrong, one should take charge and accept full responsibility rather than engage in the "blame game." Encourage your employees to find solutions instead of wasting time trying to appear good to others. This is a vital quality for everyone who wishes to see themselves as a leader.
  • Take critical feedback and learn
Often, people in positions are used to receiving praise and accolades. But rather than driving improvement, they merely reinforce the status quo and overlook strategic shifts. Which is completely the opposite of a growth mindset. To evolve as an employee or even as a leader, one should regularly ask the team member for feedback. It could be something significant, or it could be something small, but learning from your mistakes is the best way to progress.

  • Lead from the front
We have all heard it, “The best leaders lead from the front”. This is a concept that is easy to misinterpret. People think leaders are more comfortable actually doing all the work themselves. And that’s where they are wrong. What distinguishes Managers and Leaders is how they handle a situation. While a manager sees their mission as “to manage their people” a leader sees their mission as “managing their process and growing their people”. So instead of getting engaged in doing the daily work, employees should encourage their teammates to complete the work and develop their skills. And if they need help at any point, be available to them for full guidance and support.
  • Lead by example
Leading by example is a leadership style where you model the behaviour you want to see in your team members. Leading by example is the difference between saying, “You can do this” and “We can do this together.” Though the support and encouragement in the former are great, the latter builds connection, camaraderie, and trust.

By carrying some of the load themselves, people who lead by example actively demonstrate that they value the work of their team. Because leaders actively demonstrate that they are invested in the initiatives of their team. Hence, this style of leadership encourages high levels of engagement.
  • Help the team achieve and grow
The leader of the team serves as both a coach and an advisor, assisting members of the team in comprehending how they are performing, providing feedback on ways in which they could be

more effective, and collaborating with them to demonstrate several skills. Even the most insignificant gestures, such as recommending certification programs to a team member who needs to master a skill or connecting them to a colleague across the company who possesses that expertise. These small actions show leadership behaviour and help the team to achieve and grow in their career.
  • Therefore, adopting these practices and imbibing a leadership mindset will ensure that your employees lead strategically and effectively and set an example for the rest of the clan.
